St. Edmund Arrowsmith

St. Edmund Arrowsmith

St. Edmund Arrowsmith

Feastday: August 28
1585 - 1628

St. Edmund Arrowsmith (1585 - 1628) Edmund was the son of Robert Arrowsmith, a farmer, and was born at Haydock, England. He was baptized Brian, but always used his Confirmation name of Edmund. The family was constantly harrassed for its adherence to Catholicism, and in 1605 Edmund left England and went to Douai to study for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1612 and sent on the English mission the following year. He ministered to the Catholics of Lancashire without incident until about 1622, when he was arrested and questioned by the Protestant bishop of Chester. He was released when King James ordered all arrested priests be freed, joined the Jesuits in 1624, and in 1628 was arrested when betrayed by a young man he had censored for an incestuous marriage. He was convicted of being a Catholic priest, sentenced to death, and hanged, drawn, and quartered at Lancaster on August 28th. He was canonized as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales by Pope Paul VI in 1970. His feast day is August 28th.

Just a note to say that St. Edmund Arrowsmith is a saint local to the area in which I live (North West England) and we celebrate his feast day today (September 1.st). There are relics of this saint and martyr as well as relics of many of the martyrs who gave their life for the faith here in the north of England at a wonderful shrine at Fernyhalgh (pronounced Ferneehal) to Our Lady and the Martyrs. The website of the local catholic church and the shrine may be found at the website [http://www.ladyewellshrine.co.uk/home/home.htm] If any readers come to the North of England they will find this a wonderful place to visit and will feel close to the martyrs who kept the flame of the faith alight in the darkest times of the English reformation.

As far as I'm, aware St Edmund Arrowsmith is our family tree. My fathers mothers maiden name was arrowsmith. Her full name was Mary Christina Arrowsmith, her father was known as Jim Arrowsmith who was a chief engineer on the Tyne. they lived in Noth Shields, but that's as far as I've got. My brother has some relics from Edmund that have been in the family for years. Would be great to hear back from anyone who has any more information.

I would also be interested to see any genealogy of St. Edmund's relatives. My mother-in-law's maiden name is Arrowsmith and I wonder if there is a connection. Some biographies of St. Edmund mention that he had three siblings - I wonder what happened to them...

    St. Edmund Arrowsmith
He was baptized Brian - out of respect for the sacrement of baptism - this saint should be also listed as " Saint Brian " as is the case in other saint listings......
